The year Starlight Express broke the record

starlight expressIn 1989 Starlight Express set a new course record and became the first boat to break 24 hours. From The Advocate of Stamford:

Bruce Eissner of the Boston Yacht Club and the crew of Starlight Express, a Santa Cruz 70 sloop, set a course record of 23 hours, 54 minutes and 38 seconds while winning the 55th annual Vineyard Race.

Starlight Express left Stamford Friday at 6 p.m. in the 238-mile race sponsored by the Stamford Yacht Club. The sloop returned at 5:54:38 p.m. Saturday night, the first time The Vineyard race has been completed in less than 24 hours.
