Dawn Riley to address Vineyard Race skippers’ meeting

Dawn Riley, accomplished Whitbread and America’s Cup sailor who is currently executive director of the Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, N.Y., will be the featured speaker at this year’s Vineyard Race skippers’ meeting.

“We are very pleased and lucky to have Dawn join us,” said Charles Goodrich, who along with Diane McKeever is chairing the 2010 running of the Vineyard.

“She is an accomplished sailor and great speaker. I know all the entrants in this year’s race will enjoy hearing her,” he added.

This year’s running of the Vineyard, presented by Thomson Reuters, starts Friday, September 3 off Stamford, Conn. The skippers’ meeting will take place Thursday evening at the host Stamford Yacht Club.

Dawn has been involved in sailing all her life. She is best known for her role in four America’s Cup campaigns most notably as team captain of America3, the women’s team in 1995 and as CEO and captain of America True in 2000. Dawn was also involved in two Whitbreads (now Volvo Ocean Race), as watch captain/engineer aboard Maiden in 1989-90 and Heineken in 1993-94.

Dawn was named executive director of Oakcliff earlier this year. Oakcliff is dedicated to training sailors, owners and teams with a range of top-level sailing and racing programs.

This year’s Vineyard will be the 76th running of the 238-mile classic. It will be the final race of the Northern Ocean Racing Trophy (NORT) series.

This year’s race will feature three courses for the first time. In addition to the traditional Vineyard course out to Buzzards Bay and back as well as the shorter Cornfield Point course, organizers have added the 143-mile Seaflower Course which will allow competitors to compete in a long race without having to leave the Sound.

Race organizers are also encouraging multihulls to enter. A separate start will be  provided as long as there are five entrants that meet safety standards. The race will use NEMA ratings.

The race will also feature a welcome back party and awards ceremony Sunday night on the lawn of Stamford Yacht Club, a tradition that was started during last year’s 75th running of the race.
