Shortened course is announced

All boats in this year’s Vineyard Race will now sail inside Long Island Sound due to the expected heavy seas over the weekend.

Those boats that were expected to sail to the Buzzards Bay tower and back will now sail the shorter Seaflower course. The decision was announced by Principal Race Officer Ray Redniss at tonight’s skipper’s meeting at Stamford Yacht Club.

In addition, the starting sequence may change to allow the smaller, slower boats an earlier start Saturday. A final decision will be made Friday.

Redniss said conditions Saturday morning, when the race is expected to start, will be nearly ideal. Winds will be 18 to 20 from the west with gusts to 25. However, outside the Sound the sea state will be extremely dangerous due to Hurricane Earl which will have passed by that time.
