76th Vineyard off to fast start

Sixty eight boats crossed the starting line this morning off Stamford in the 76th running of the Vineyard Race, presented by Thomson Reuters.

Steady 25 knot winds sent the boats to the east on one of two courses. Thirteen sections started with many of the boats using their chutes although a few decided to play it safe.

Boats are racing PHRF and IRC and there are also sections for multihulls and doublehanded boats.

As of 1330 the bulk of the fleet was off Milford.

Boats are racing on one of two courses — the Seaflower course and Cornfield Point course. Those that planned to race the Vineyard course to Buzzards Bay and back are racing the shorter Seaflower course. Race organizers made the decision Thursday to have all boats stay within Long Island Sound because of the heavy seas in Block Island Sound caused by Hurricane Earl.
